Plate: Chrysanthemums and the Rising Moon, Suzuki Harunobu (attributed), around 1766

"Chrysanthemums and the Rising Moon", a woodblock print attributed to Suzuki Harunobu, likely made around 1766. The design first appeared as a calendar print for that year. In Japan's old calendar the order of long and short months changed every year, so artists hid each year's pattern inside the picture, and here the markings sat on the bowl. Many unsigned calendar prints of the 1760s have been credited to Harunobu. This is the second edition: miniature chrysanthemums growing in a pale celadon bowl.
