Plate: Various Spring Flowers, Kubo Shunman, around 1820
"Various Spring Flowers", a woodblock print by Kubo Shunman, likely made around 1820, near the end of his life, for the Kasumi poetry circle. Poems run in columns above the spring blossoms. One of the poems likely reads: "Deep in the spring haze, the blossoms grow ever richer in golden color: the kerria in the garden's nook." The flower is yamabuki (kerria), whose bright yellow was a common Edo slang term for gold coins. Futokoro means both "the nook of a garden" and "one's purse," so the joke may refer to a wish for wealth. This also suggests the brownish five-petaled flowers on the right are kerria whose yellow pigment has simply faded over time.
Using our own bespoke approach, WildAir gently yet bravely excites the top end to greatly increase clarity and presence. In case things get too bright or harsh, turn up Peak Guard to duck against any harsh or brittle peaks.
