Plate: Flower Clouds, Odilon Redon, around 1903

"Flower Clouds", a pastel by Odilon Redon, likely painted around 1903. For years Redon worked only in black, in the charcoals and lithographs called his Noirs, until he discovered color through pastel in the 1890s. Here a small sailboat drifts through a glowing sea and sky, a radiant, spiritual vision from the far side of that change.

Feed it anything and it devolves into an unexpected, moving drone. Atmospheres, beds, ghostly robot vocals... oh my!
